What is a Community Mens Shed?

A Community Mens Shed is a community space consisting of workshops, gardens and meeting rooms where men gather and work together on meaningful activities and projects for personal and community benefit. It gives a place and space of belonging which improves the health and well-being of members, reducing the number of men who are at risk from preventable health issues that may emanate from social isolation.

Unemployment and transition from full-time work through retirement, sickness, injury, redundancy, disability, discrimination and major life disruptions can be an extremely difficult time. The relaxed friendly environment of a community Mens Shed has been a tonic for many. For others it has been a place where they can share their interest, skills and friendship for the benefit of others.

Jeff Kennett of Beyond Blue says – “The coming together of Mens Sheds has been the most profound initiative so far this century for men’s mental health and well-being.” At the AMSA National Conference (2013) he told delegates “Your Mens Shed is part of one of the most successful grass roots mens' movements of modern times”.
The Ballina Community Men’s Shed is a member of the Australian Mens Shed Association which after less than 10 years boasts around 1000 member Men’s Sheds in Australia (with another 300-400 overseas) composing about 125,000 members. Its excellent website is:
